Why walk?

Why walk?

Walking is great because…

  • It’s sociable
  • It puts you in a good mood – walking can be fun and makes you feel better
  • It helps you to become more independent and take responsibility for getting yourself to school
  • It increases your levels of exercise
  • You can explore your neighbourhood and places that you didn’t know were there.

Walking a mile takes about 2,000  steps and only about 10-15 minutes.  You’ll also burn about 100 calories- the same as a Kit Kat chocolate bar.

Experts say you should walk at least 10,000 steps a day to stay healthy.  That sounds a lot but you’ll be surprised how many steps you take each day just doing normal things.

Why not try a pedometer?  It’s a little gadget that counts how many steps you take.  If your new school isn’t too far, why not see how many steps it takes to walk there?

I walk to and from school with friends who live nearby.  There are always lots of us so I feel safe.  I like this as it gives me more talking time with my friends.
